As a working face painter, I've painted thousands of children over the past 13 years. The best quality is water-based face paint. And I would say there are several tried and true designs that remain popular after all this time.

Thanks to social media and popular culture, there are also trends which sweep through the 'industry'. These tend to coincide with new release movies (eg Star Wars, Xmen, Frozen, Moana, etc). Some of these trends seem to last longer than others. I'm sure my fellow face painters would agree the Frozen phenomenon appears here to stay). Then there are also seasonal designs like Halloween, Christmas, national events, etc.

The most popular designs are Butterfly mask, Princess Crown, Rainbow and Flowers, Shark, Dolphins, Mask  Gem, Unicorn, Spiderman, Spider, Mermaid, Dragon, Cat, Tiger.

If you're looking to start face painting, either at home or as a business, then it would certainly be a good idea to begin by learning and practicing the most popular designs first. 

Perhaps try a simple version of each of the face paint design ideas I've listed above.

Then as your confidence and skills grow, you can add new designs to your skillset. You can also add your own creativity to the popular face paint designs you have already become familiar with. 

In my opinion, the best way to learn how to face paint is to find designs you like and attempt to recreate them. You don't need to reinvent the wheel. Especially as a beginner.

Start by searching Google, Pinterest and YouTube. You'll be amazed to see what is out there!

In most cases, it will take some practice to achieve a pleasing design. So don't be disheartened if your first few attempts don't look as wonderful as the original. For most people, face painting isn't as easy as the professionals make it look. Even with the fancy rainbow cakes, there is a technique to learn. But you can do it if you keep trying. Don't give up because you don't get it first try. Keep working on it. I promise in time your skills will improve. All the popular face paint designs will be in your memory and your hands will know exactly how to paint them without using a reference picture.
